In 1829, he decided to dedicate exclusively to learn, mainly about the Christianity and several oriental languages. One of his most important works is his Literal Translation of the Whole New Testament from the Anicient Syriac Version, first published in 1851. On it, Murdock shows his vast knowledge of Christianity and of the Syriac language, which was the primary language used by Christian people in Northern Mesopotamia (now Iraq) before Arabic became the dominant language in the area.
