StarVault is a lightweight document management system for business professionals and laptop warriors. People often maintain multiple versions of the same document to track changing situations or to suit slightly different audiences. Usually this degenerates to an unorganized sprawl of cryptically named files, from where it is difficult to find the right document quickly. StarVault provides a simple solution to this problem. It gives an intuitive, Windows explorer-based interface to annotate, archive and retrieve multiple versions of the same document. Key Features: Usability: StarVault has a simple Windows explorer based interface which lets the user right-click on the file of choice, to check in the file to the StarVault database, with an optional annotation describing the state of the file at the time of the checkin. The original file is left untouched, may be modified and checked in as many times as required, with a comment (annotation) describing the change from the previous version. A right-click on the file will also present the user an option to check the StarVault status of the file. If the file has ever been checked in, a list of versions is presented to the user, any of which he may open or copy to a destination of his choice. LightWeight: StarVault uses the SQLite database engine. It does not have any running services which may impact system performance. Search: StarVault keeps track of the time when the versions of the document are filed. It lets the user search for file versions within a specified time interval, as well by filename and checkin comment. Single Instance Storage: StarVault has an advanced single instance storage engine which identifies common content across multiple files and stores only one copy of such common content. It is able to do this even for documents like PowerPoint presentations. For example, different presentations (or different versions of the same presentation) may share a few slides. StarVault identifies such shared slides and store them only once. It also uses compression to further increase the storage efficiency of the repository. Platform Support: StarVault works on MS Windows 2000 Professional and MS Windows XP.
